For lastest updates visit the Blog; A number of trials and tribulations to get here, but I have successfully moved to the UK and everything is coming together. Living in the town Hatfield which is just outside North London, working for the City of London and most importantly Julianne and I have had our first child - Robin Bruce Weller. My friend Nadia is also staying with us. Hatfield is nice as it is surrounded by fields and actually is green, such as grass verges – something you just don’t get in London. And what a place to work for, the City of London it is just so different than any other Local Body both here in the UK and back in NZ. Now London is a huge city, but in the middle of 7 million people, but right smack in the centre is a small square mile which is the original heart of the City. This square mile is where the original Roman city was located, and during the middle ages where the medieval city sat. So this is a great place for me to work. Some interesting stats about the City: => Is the only local authority where the focus is on business, not on people who live the area. That is so medieval. => Is the financial centre of the entire world (which is not so good during a banking melt down) => 8000 people live in the City, but numbers really swell, by 300,000 as people come in and work every day. => The city is actually only a single square mile in size => Looks after a number of things outside its area, a unique feature for a local authority, eg Epping Forest and Hampstead Heath. => Has its own Lord Mayor, not to be confused with the Mayor of Greater London, currently Boris. => The Lord Mayor gets to live in the 300 year old Mansion House for their term of office. Just like the White House and 10 Downing Street. => The City is the only local authority which still has business involved in voting. (and they vastly out number residents). All other local authorities got hid of this in the 60’s. => I work at Guildhall, which is a 500 year old building mentioned in my Lonely Planet guide. It is a large building which looks like a church almost –and was where all the Guildsmen used to meet. => The Guilds still exist by the way – through I am not really sure what they currently do. => The City has its own police force, which wear different badges (the crest of the City of London) and have red and white instead of the standard black and white colours. => The oldest local authority England. => Even Parliament is based on City of London’s system. => The City has offices based outside UK(how weird is that I ask you), due to its international influence due to the banking and financial centre.
